Sand wasps ruining my thyme.

I'm not sure what these tiny wasps are called, but they burrow into the soil in and around my large thyme bed in the spring, making a terrible mess of it. Mulching is not an option. Can anyone recommend something else I might try to prevent these pests from getting a foot hold this spring?
