Wouldn't expect the starts to still be available. In mild winter areas asparagus crowns are typically sold and planted in late winter and very early spring and sales of the crowns stop or are sold out in March.

As a rule of thumb, if it is time to harvest, it is too late to plant :-)

We have three asparagus patches (all in raised beds) in Zone 9b. They are doing well, but the ones that came from our local nursery are doing better than the ones that came from Home Depot.

Too late to plant here but Peaceful Valley Organic Farm Supply (mail order) generally has good starts.

I just bought the roots from Home depot online. can you please advice on how to prepare the raised bed for planting them ? Also does it need to be planted in full sun or partial?

I would be very suspicious about the viability of any asparagus root/crowns being sold this late in the season. Especially from some place as unreliable about plant quality as Home Depot.

It is much too late in the season to plant them just about anywhere in the US (more so for mild and therefore early planting regions) and unless they have been stored very carefully - not a box store strong suit - the roots will be dry and desiccated. And very likely dead.

Caveat emptor.

I bought mine at a local feed store and nursery. lowes & home depot root starts of any kind are usually iffy. once my bed was established I started my own crowns from seed. since I already had a source I could wait the 3 years to harvest the newer crop. I now have a lot of asparagus this time of the year. some of it doesn't make it to the house. raw fresh asparagus covered in morning dew is pretty tasty.

This is how the Asparagus roots arrived in mail, any tips on planting would be appreciated . Soil prep and whether to plant in full sun etc

Plant in full sun with deep, good draining soil. You can amend with compost if desired. Plant 8"-12" deep and about 12-18" apart. Keep all grasses and weeds out of the area. Good luck!
