Curbside tipping

I ordered material online from JoAnns for masks and will do a curbside pickup tomorrow. Unlike a restaurant order there was no place to tip when placing the order. So how do I safely tip the person who brings the order to the car? Handing them cash or an envelope seems the only way but not safe. Just thank them and skip a tip?

I ordered from Joanns as well and will be getting the order curb side tomorrow. I never even considered a tip, to me, a sincere thank you is more appropriate.

I have a bin in the back of my van for picking up groceries. Before I leave home I tape the tip in an envelope to the side of the bin then tell the delivery person to take it.

What is the difference? Your arm is about 3 ft. Long, theirs is about 3 ft long, you touched the envelope and the money in it.....I would just hand it to them. They may not accept a tip.

I would personally not tip. It's not a service industry where tipping is appropriate when you go inside, and the location of the transaction has merely changed.

I picked up some computer stuff from best buy today and did not tip-- but I expressed my great thanks and wished them good health. They were genuinely having fun-- and they were OLDER men-- older than me. Not the young guys you normally see at Best Buy.

I have been giving very large tips for my grocery shopping/delivery people.

I would like to tip folks doing that job, but it really doesn't seem smart, since handing anything to, or taking something from someone is problematic. I wish there was a way to do it through the shopping apps.

Cashiers are asking people not to make them handle cash. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I even have any cash, I haven't used any for weeks.

When we used the curbside service through Kroger it was handled by Kroger employees. When we went through Meijer it was picked by a Shipt employee. We then received a survey on the employee and had the option to tip using the app. Just FYI

I think it's more than appropriate to try to tip workers who are on the front lines and most at risk for exposure! Whether it's normally a service industry or not, many of these people are low wage workers providing a valuable service to all of us at personal risk to themselves. I have been quarantining cash for several weeks now. I would put the tip in an envelope no licking) or a sandwich bag with a note on the outside that the $$ has been quarantined for so many days. They can leave it in the envelope until they feel it's safe.

Some of the services I've used do not allow tipping, however.

I only shop by myself (why do so many people still shop in groups? hello?) and I am really working at keeping it to 1 trip a week. My cart is overflowing. In fact, once it was bagged it took 2 carts, which was just as well because i put all my non-perishables first and so they had their own cart. They went on the left side of my SUV, where they will relax for a few days, and all the perishables had their own cart and they went on the right side.... those I will bring inside and wipe down and put away today.

I could not navigate two shopping carts on my way out of the store, so the bagger helped move the carts. I tipped him. He initially said no because that is their policy (DS worked there). I insisted. We were both masked, he had gloves too. He looked to be about 8. (JK).

We've always tipped the online shoppers, but now we don't get near them enough to hand them the money unless I leave it where they put the bags in. In the past, a lot of them did not accept it.

I like the idea of the envelope taped to the bin and let them decide if they want to take it or not. Thanks all.

One of my family members has been in contact with someone who recently tested positive, so we are quarantining. Tonight was the first time I've ever ordered groceries online using Instacart. I was grateful I could include the tip in my online transaction, and I was generous (or, believe I was). If cash were required, I would have skipped it, given our circumstances, and hoped they would have understood. I really hope what comes around, goes around, for these essential workers making hourly wages.

    Thank you, Mtn.

I use WalMart pick up frequently. Before the shelter in place, it was a weekly pick up. Now getting a time slot is almost impossible.

That being said, WM employees aren't allowed to accept tips. They have a survey they send out afterwards, and if you include the name of the employee, they get some kind of reward. I always try to get their names.

These people are providing a service at the risk of their own health. I'd find a way to tip if at all possible. I like the envelope taped to the basket as well.
