Master Bedroom/Closet

There was a last minute change so ... our master bedroom is now roughed in at 14' x 14' 6".
Our closet is only 7'x 5' 4. The 5' 4" being the wall with the door.

Question: Contractor wants to leave as is saying you can put shallow shelves upon entering closet then hanging clothes further down.

I would like to extend closet to 7' x 6' (taking 8" from the 14' 6" wall) thus having 24" clearance on one side atleast.

What do you think?

Contractor might want to convince you to leave it so they don't have to make the adjustment.

He will probably charge for the change, but if you need the extra space it is worth it. You can also gain space if you use a pocket door so you don't loose the shelf space where the door swings.

You might want to take the plans to a closet designer to get a quick mock up to see what you will ultimately need.

I am assuming that you are just at the framing stage and no mechanicals or finished have been installed.

You'll end up with bedroom that is 14' x 13'10" and a closet that's 7' x 6' (2 parallel runs of 7')?

You'll want that space in closet, so I would go for it? Will there be an extra cost?

Will the door open into the closet or open out? A pocket door?

@Sawhorse - yes, in framing stage. Good idea about closet designer. That is why I want to correct now if it makes sense. @Kathy - that is correct. Door will open out. Initially it was a pocket door but it is regular door.
