I think it is important to keep in mind that these are cut flower that are being destroyed, not the bulbs themselves.

A similar situation exists here. The Skagit Valley, about an hour north of Seattle, is home to the largest commercial tulip production outside of Holland. And annually hosts a month long festival celebrating tulips and opens the growing fields and display gardens to 100's of thousands of visitors every April. Except this year. The festival was cancelled and the display gardens remain closed. And any visitors are discouraged from even driving to the tulip fields to admire them from their cars (too much traffic and of course they will not remain in their cars).

The growers have lost untold revenue from this closure, both in cut flower sales, bulb pre-orders and other festival income sources. However, at least one grower is not letting the flowers go to waste and has been packaging up bundles of cut tulips to deliver to hospitals, health care workers and nursing and retirement homes.

I have been doing my part :-) I am a bit obsessive about having cut flowers in my house and my infrequent trips to the grocery store always include a bundle or two of tulips.......you can keep your TP - I need cut flowers!! They are essential for my mental health!

No...for me what is shocking about this event that I referenced in my post is the huge waste of resources and it is reflected more seriously in food "stuffs" as well i.e. farmers destroying crops and dumping milk (as COVID-19 restrictions lower demand). As this calamity goes on and on there are more possibly previously unforeseen consequences of this virus.
