You posted this several times on fb. Unless you are lucky and received one of the peonies that have yellow roots something was placed on top of this to block the light which would have allowed the normal coloration. It might have been something like a pile of snow but I would ask others in your household to try to remember what if anything was placed there.

The only other thing would be chemical burn.

All you can do now is wait and hope they survive.
