My outdated kitchen needs a makeover!

We built this house in 2000, and the kitchen is in need of updating!! We have hickory cabinets that we plan to keep. We are putting in vinyl wood flooring over the top of the ceramic tile. We will be getting all new appliances (stainless??), I would like to go with a counter depth refrigerator and I want to put the microwave in the proposed island, if possible. We are planning on granite for the counters, with the granite back splash and paint above it (like it is now). The log post is supporting, it is a log house, so if we can keep it and incorporate it into the island (?) we would like to. If it won't work, we'll have to put in a support beam. I want to put a hood over the stove (there isn't a vent), so that upper cabinet section can totally change. I am including my layout on graph paper, as well as pictures of how the kitchen looks now. The window over the sink is south facing. Please give me any ideas, suggestions, etc. Thank you!!

The tile has to be removed, and the underlayment properly "prepped". This is to prevent the gout lines "telegraphing" through the vinyl. It won't happen right away but, it will happen.

I think when you select your floor find a color consistent with your other flooring and cabinets......ie. warm tones, not washed grey.

I'm confused about how you intend to keep all the same cabinets while exchanging a peninsula for an island? how are you getting the additional cabinets to match? also, have you selected your flooring or are you still looking? if you lay it on top of the tile, will under-counter appliances like your dishwasher still fit? is your drawing suggesting 30" clearance in front of your range? how will you get things in and out of the oven? so many questions!

acm, We are able to get the same kitchen cabinets that will match and that is how we can exchange the peninsula for the island. We are still looking at flooring options, but the flooring people we are working with said that the under-counter appliances will fit like they do now. There is 35" between the oven and the proposed island, that IS one of my concerns and one of the biggest things I'm looking for help with. Great questions, thank you!!!

If possible try to move the range to where the fridge is. That would be a better layout for cooking - no carrying food prepped from the sink across the room to the range. In an ideal world I would magically move your fridge to the other side of the dishwasher - giving you one of the ideal layouts of fridge, sink, prep area, range.

It sounds like you want to change out your appliances which is fine - I do have white with my older wood cabinets:
