Jumping spider in basement

Hi, all, i'm seeking potential advice from anyone with experience in this. See, I discovered a gross spider in my basement. When I tried to kill it with my improvised "ant-killer" (which i once made by fastening a rectangular cardboard to the underside of a long deck-brush, and which usually successfully kills ants)...

...unfortunately this creepy-thing didn't get killed.

Rather it proceeded to jump toward me in SPEEDY VERY-HIGH JERKY JUMPS, with each jump halfway up toward the ceiling! I was petrified, and ran partially upstairs, still gripping the ant-killer.. but then i crept back down to peek, and saw it fleeing underneath a table.

This was a few days ago. I did some research, but still not quite sure what it is. I think it might be a form of spider cricket.

I need to access the basement alot, because not only are my recycling bins + food storage down there, but also it's convenient to exit the house thru that room which exits to the driveway.

I don't like the idea of glue traps and pellets.

So do you think containers of soapy water would do the trick?

If so, which type of containers? This? https://cdnimg.webstaurantstore.com/images/products/large/230251/1551883.jpg

Can it be any soap, such as the Green Palmolive-Ultra?

What ratio of soap to water, and how many containers?

As for attracting it to the container(s), i don't have a clue, nor do i know where the spider is anymore. It may have fled to a western room, furthest from the eastern-exit. After all, lately i've been clanging on a metal duct every time i descend the stairs to the eastern-exit room. That's because i don't want to surprise it, as i'm petrified of it jumping again!

Apparently someone really did this by accident.

I haven't spied any such spiders wot jump - let alone one that jumps so high!

I think regular water'd do the drowning job as quickly as soapy water. Also doubt whether the surface tension on regular water'd be strong enough to let him get surface strong enough to sustain any kind of jump.

Have no idea how to entice the critter to approach the water, though.

Sorry I can't offer any satisfactory help.

That first suggestion sure was a barn- (well ... house- )burner, wasn't it?

One sure does get surprises, around here! First, way too much help ... then, too little!

Jumping spiders are harmless to humans. He was probably just jumping to get away from being smacked. Poor thing. I don't kill spiders. Even the black widows get to live unless they become invasive in the house but that was years ago when this was a new build.

Found a whole bunch of their webs inside the tubes of my metal hammock stand when I took it out of the shed yesterday. I am just leaving it out in the sun for a day so if any are inside they can leave before I assemble it.

I don't have any advice, but I'm cringing on your behalf. Those things creep me out. After Dad died, we were renovating his house. I was removing the wheelchair ramp from the garage. There must have been 100 camel crickets under there. I think I screamed and used another door for a while.

    *shudder *

Did it have look like this. This is what we have. They sort of pulse up and down quickly when disturbed, and are responsible for cobwebs.

Ugh, I loathe spider crickets! The only way I can kill them is to approach slowly, so they don't jump, then drop a heavy flat object on them. Finally, a use for old college textbooks!

Wildchild, these things are long-legged jumpy crickets, not spiders at all. I agree with you, spiders are "good guys" and I try not to harm them.

I strongly agree that you have seen a camel cricket, aka cave cricket. They are commonly found in basements and have an annoying habit of vaulting themselves towards you when you try to smash them.

They are completely harmless. Use an aerosol wasp spray on them.

I would never, ever go in that basement again. I’d sell the house. Kidding, but I HATE spiders. I understand that they’re harmless... I just can’t help it.

How about using a spray that kills spiders. Just spray it on them. A little dab’ll do ya. For example: https://www.terro.com/terro-spider-killer-spray-6?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5KfTvpmG6QIVtP3jBx0CxgILEAQYAyABEgLVwvD_BwE

A caution about insect-spray -- these bugs jump SO FAST. If you only have a couple, use the heavy falling object method because they can jump faster than aerosol spray but can't jump faster than the speed of gravity. If you have more than a couple, call a professional exterminator.

I believe that particular type of spider is called a Nope.

If it's a Cave Cricket (which I've seen occasionally in my basement for over 40 years), it's not a spider.

Whatever it is, I suggest you do what I do with anything I don't want in the house: Depending on its size, take a small paper or plastic cup or a large quart yogurt container, and put the container over the critter. Then slide a piece of paper cardboard or card stock underneath the cup, being careful not to let the critter out. Then take the covered cup outdoors and let the contents go.

Think "catch and release" rather than "kill."

It could also be a grasshopper.

I've never see a spider jump that high, either, and I agree that it has to be some type of cricket or grasshopper. Both of them are harmless, but I wouldn't want to pick up either of them without a covering ( don't like the feel of their squirmy legs...eeew ! )

Alisande, nice method but won't work for spider crickets. They are 100x too fast.

This totally sounds like a camel cricket (also called a cave cricket). They are a common part of a cave ecosystem. My old house basement is truly a "cave" and they have been thriving there for years. My first encounters with them were completely terrifying as they would jump towards me (they still do). They are completely harmless but gross. My only suggestion for control is to keep your basement as dry as possible and keep the floors and walls free of debris. If there are any small holes in the walls or other access points for them around the foundation, they will come in.

I agree with Cave Cricket-creepy but harmless but aren't spiders mostly? I seem to be attractive to spiders, they always run towards me. AACK! That's when a cat comes in handy.

    Foster some kittens!

Well, thanks to all of you for empathizing! I mean it's ongoing trauma each time I descend for the trash, recycling, etc.etc.

    Seabornman, it's not like yours.

Rob333, it may be somewhat like your URL video.

Blueostrich, it did not look like a Nope

Nor is it a grasshopper at all!

Nickel_kg, i agree. "Catch & release" creeps me out!

I wish an exterminator would come across this thread & put in his two cents...

I have used these before for flea's and spiders. They really do work. Easy to use.

Judy thanks, but the thing is, the basement is full of clutter, so the toxic chemicals would get trapped inside the clutter. I don't want to take a chance, especially as i'm chem-sensitive, and I really don't have the strength to cover everything up with protective cloths. It's too much hassle.

I haven't seen the cricket for awhile, but then again, i've been making a racket each time i descent the stairs.

However, you gave me some good fun, cuz your suggestion led me to research Hot Shot on YouTube and i came across an adorable video of the Lagunas Family with twin babies who were so cute, they cheered me up ;-)
