Had a number boulders we needed to find a use for, and wanted a bigger firepit to burn limbs of downed trees without all the labor of cutting it down to size. It was also important to me to have the structure of the pit below grade, so that people sitting around it wouldn't be shielded from the heat. I am pleased with how this turned out.
