What is tile adhered to?

Love the idea of a tile deck, but curious what type of a surface is underneath. Concrete? Rubber deck? Is one kind of a surface preferable? Or is a certain climate better? We live in the NE, and never see tile decks, but would love to have one.

Regarding the type of installation for your region you would need to consult your local building code. This type has waterproofing then concrete float to level the deck then thinset to adhere the tile. We had the tile sloped into center with a couple drains, one towards left and one right. Nowadays I use trough drains along the inside edge of railing, with deck sloping away from the home. You can have the metal of the drain exposed, or my personal favorite is to have the stone or tile cover it completely, then you have your stone installer cut the pieces to cover it. I like the cleaner look.
