Hey, Jackie. Thank you for sharing about your Lamarque and posting the photos. That old one really is gigantic. Is the fence the only support it has?

RedBird...welcome!! and thank you for posting pictures of your Lamarque. It must look beautiful being 15 feet tall and climbing up your porch! Please feel free to post as many pictures as you like....I would love to see more.

I planted Lamarque in 2017 and have been impressed by its rampant growth, but disappointed in the lack of flowers. This year, finally, it's covered with buds, and I look forward to seeing it bloom!

RedBird - The old huge one is not actually being supported by that fence - it is actually free standing, and supporting itself. The photo just shows about half of it - it is just as large again on the other side.

I just took a picture of the old old huge Lamarque in my neighbor's yard through a second story window in our house. The pic is telescoped, but you can now see the rest of the bush draping on the other side of it away from the fence - it is even larger than I thought. The red rose on the left is a large Dr. Huey which blooms happily every Spring - possibly left over from another rose planted on the fence line - we think in the 1930s from local knowledge -

Sigh...I've been waiting for an Atmore Lamarque for two years, but Rose Petals seems to always be sold out. Looking at these pix I may "settle" for any Lamarque I can get my hands on, lol.

Fig and Plumaria: You referenced the Atmore Lamarque. I'm curious...what is the difference in that one and the "regular" Lamarque? I bought my Lamarque from Antique Rose Emporium; it was listed as Lamarque.

Sheila: You also mentioned the Atmore. I appreciate any information about it. I had not heard of it until now. Thanks!

Redbird, it's my understanding that the Atmore Lamarque is a very old clone, an "original" plant dating back to the 1860's, found in Ventura County, CA. As such, it had never been grafted to a rootstock and was suspected to be free of all the viruses that most mass-propagated roses have suffered from (although many new modern introductions are now grown only own-root, and don't become infected by association with infected rootstock). It was ELISA tested, and was indeed found to be virus free. As such, it *should* be even more vigorous than the standard clone that has been in circulation for years (egad! More vigorous??? lol). Other than being virus free, it's identical to any other Lamarque.

Edit: I forgot to mention that if you want DETAILS, Jerijen can help. She's the one who ID'd the clone known as Atmore Lamarque.

Like fig is saying, Atmore is virus free. Here, my Lamarque from ARE caught downy mildew the Fall after planting and faded until I removed it. Atmore has been excellently healthy. I'll try to post photos when bloom is going.

Fig and Shelia: A belated thanks for the information about the Atmore Lamarque. I was able to find Jeri's notes on the Help Me Find site. I also appreciate the information about viruses. My knowledge on viruses is pretty elementary - mostly references to the possible virus issue with Marechel Niel and a few paragraphs here and there in books.
