Nothing wrong with variety, but if you go crazy with it, you'll risk a busy, jumbled mess. A simpler landscape reads easier.

We were thinking of turning the u drive into grass because it takes up the whole tiny yard and there is enough room to have a 2 car driveway on the right side.

We just fenced in the backyard so that took most all of our budget for the outside for now.

If you change the drive to lawn, you'll need a nice walk to the street for the mailbox, or to move the mailbox closer to drive. Somehow you'll need to tie the left side landing to a path in order for it to make sense.
