Healthy respect for polar vortex

Darn!

I have been gardening in same location for close to 20 years and had once cold frost like that and never lost any tomatoes sitting in their Wall of waters...

not this time. Out of 64 tomatoes 5 have significant top burn and about a dozen mostly cosmetic leaf damage.

I covered whatever hostas I could. Water froze in the bucket. I ran a heater in hoophouse with veggies and potted hostas...

It seems came in pockets. Biggest damage to my holding bed with lots of plants, problem many are new plants, bought last spring- fall and successfully overwintered in ground... just to mushy up in May.

Please tell me that they will recover too...

I covered 73 hostas with various containers. Covered for 3 days - uncovering today. So far everything looks good. I know it got down to 26F here Saturday from local Weather underground sites. Some of my not covered Lancifolias were topped damaged. Not covered Albo's look good. Plantagenias never unfurled - last hosta to leaf out - read somewhere that Plantagenia is native from a colder climate in China. More respect for old timey hostas.

I really missed seeing my hostas for 3 days.

OMG Lindalana, I also really feel sad for you. I am only 90 miles north of you within 5 miles of the lake, but with a neighbors help I was able to cover almost everything with pots, fabric, and straw. Not everything got covered. But luckily none seem damaged. We also had a frost advisory last night issued about 9:00 pm again, but it was too late, I uncovered everything yesterday afternoon. All looks well today. Again I am so sorry...... :-(

The weather is so unpredictable and it has been so cold and windy. Now that the weather has improved, we just have to wait and see if there is any regrowth. Sorry about your plants that have been damaged. It is really sad after you put all that work into it. Good luck.

This is crocodile socks.

Last night storm overturned couple of pots that had undamaged hosta. This year is officially over. Lol

On the good note I have tons of seedlings.
