Jasmine minima would work. It flowers and it is easy to maintain.

Not flowering per se, but colorful so can serve as it ... dwarf oyster plant.

Asiatic Jasmine

Purple queen/purple heart

Asiatic jasmine, yes! Much of my yard is covered with it from only 2 pots started in the shade. It worked its way into sunny areas just fine. However, trimming it (lowering it with my weed-whacker) calls for caution, especially in the sunny areas. Since it only gets watered by nature there, hot dry weather can leave a leafless, scorched look.

Where it has been left alone in full sun, it has been fine and provides protective shade for the base of plants growing in it - azalea (dwarf), epidendrum radicans (reed orchid), Texas sage, and (below - a thunbergia maybe - it's in bloom again now, May 22). Photo is several years old. All are still thriving in the sun with the protection of the asiatic jasmine.

However...

When I pulled the thick-growing asiatic jasmine away from the trunk of this oak, I saw this disaster. Rarely mentioned online, apparently having a tree's shady base surrounded by ground cover that holds moisture is a TERRIBLE idea. The tree is too vulnerable to disease there so it needs the protection of bark... which in this case had disintegrated ("rotted"?). The tree is near the garden hose outlet and I had frequently watered this area. Lesson learned.
