OldDutch, a question about your onions grown from supermarket scallions. Checking online, I find organic green onions in a grocery store here. Would that be the same thing, do you think? I love green onions and have often thought to start some Welsh onions but I sometimes suck at getting things to grow from seed. Are green onions from the produce department in a grocery from a perpetual-type onion like a Welsh onion? I guess I never gave it much thought how they came to be.

DG, I do not know what the variety is; there are so many used for scallions. This one is winter hardy zone 4 but does not sucker out much. It blooms on top of about a three foot stem with a baseball to softball sized head of sort of mauve red flowers. So I think it is really one of the Welsh onions (they are Far Eastern and not really Welsh at all) Really very pretty. Even the big stalks are relatively mild and can be eaten out of hand. Late summer this one goes dormant and then revives in the autumn and winters over with green tops even up here in Minneapolis.

I actually bought them to eat, tossed them in the bottom of the fridge and forgot about them. When I finally remembered the roots had stretched but the tops were starting to go bad. In stead of just tossing them in the trash I said to myself "what the heck. plant em and see what" I think every one of them recovered.

First planting is done even the tomatoes peppers and sweet potatoes. I'm beat.

The star of the whole works to this point is Soloist mini-napa. Not yet quite heading but enough leaf per plant to make several salads. I started some more just the other day for replacement plants. That is next clean up the flats and figure out what for replacements and then what for autumn. But tonight I sit back and rest my weary bones...
