Most builders don't paint garages anymore. Personally, I would have the garage painted. We built our home 3 years ago, and had ours painted...nothing fancy. I think we used the same flat paint for the ceiling and walls.

My husband likes a little sheen. More reflective and I think a cleaner look. Easier to wipe clean too. Not that you'll do that much

Don't use flat. Flat paint is a sponge for dirt.

Our new build is painted in a satin/egg shell finish like the main part of the house (our spec home, too, by same builder). It looks very nice and finished compared to bare drywall or flat ceiling paint white (we've had both in previous homes).

SW Mindful Gray or BM Harbor Gray in satin. For trim, SW Extra White in semi-gloss. Two great garage colors that not only look awesome, but function well enough to really keep things bright enough to work on projects

I wouldn't have it dry walled and taped. And no we don't paint our garages either...and no NEVER would I be wiping the garage walls. I would get splinters.

This is a great post as we are in the process of painting the inside of our garage. We built our house 20 years ago and never painted the drywall in the garage just because there were lots of other things that were more of a priority. The drywall turned a beige colour and there are a few areas that have some stains.

We started with a good primer and now starting to paint with a semi-gloss white. Looks brighter already. I need a day break before I start painting the ceiling because my neck and shoulder are sore from priming the garage. LOL

We painted ours with a Benjamin Moore flat paint and have not had any problems with dirty walls. But we do have poured cement walls that come up 4-5 feet. I think it is a personal choice... we used what we had on hand because it is a garage.

I would paint it now and before that I would think about the storage that will go in there too. I would not do flat in there I think an eggshell finish will work fine. Of course if it is only taped and the drywall not finished that will need to be done first.

I painted the garage interior BM Atrium White in eggshell finish.

Paint it now and use exterior paint - more washable.
