Indoor Plumeria

last modified: 6 years ago

Hello! I’ve owned this plant for about a year, this is the second growth cycle it’s had since I’ve had it. I bought it as a rooted cutting with no leaves. I moved offices in January and it wasn’t happy with the move, so it dropped all of its leaves, and started growing new ones in February - as you can tell, in less than 3 months it’s been busy growing them back now that it’s all settled into the new office.

I’ve noticed that since it started growing back, it doesn’t seem to be getting enough water. Some of the new leaves will get kind of wilted looking if I don’t water it at least once every 3-4 days. Sometimes it seems as though it needs water every 1-2 days. It’s in a corner of the office with no drafts, the temperature is controlled between 69-71 degrees, and there’s a light indirect breeze from a ceiling fan. I use a spray bottle on its leaves at least once a day to make up for a lack of humidity. It’s potted in miracle grow cactus potting mix, with some gravel mixed in for drainage. On top of the soil is river rock for aesthetics. I live in southern Oregon, hence why the plant is indoor only. I lived in Texas for several years and had two outdoor plumerias that I only watered once or twice a week in the heat of the Texas sun and they were just fine. When I water this plant - I dump a gallon of water in the pot and let the excess drain out into the little pot underneath the plumeria’s pot. It gets fertilized with 9-58-8 at least once every 10 days. It sits under a 6000k 1400w LED light that it LOVES, and is on a timer for 16hrs/day. This plant has doubled in size in the 12 or so months that I’ve had it.

I’m worried about overwatering - but this plant can’t seem to get enough. Has anyone else experienced this with their indoor plants? Maybe the soil is just that good at draining?
