Vintage soapstone is carved out of a single block. Modern sinks are glued together from slabs of 3cm material and then carved.

@User, are you suggesting the vintage ones are stronger because they are from one piece and there is a difference now in structural integrity with glued sinks?

@darbuka, I wish I could go that route. I can't find a soapstone dealer/fabricator in my area and my builder is wary of doing the install without having an expert in soapstone. Catch 22.

Your builder is smart not to take the risk.

I have a thought...you could call M. Teixeira, and pose your problem. They ship their sinks (and counters) all over the country. Btw, they have locations in several areas of the US. It might be worth it, to have them ship a sink to you. M. Teixeira

At my suggestion, a poster the other day, who was having blotchyness problems with her newly installed counters, called M. Teixeira. She wrote back that they were very helpful.

Otherwise, I’d suggest choosing a different sink material. I have a large stainless steel sink with my soapstone counters.

Thanks - I do have a quote from them but the issue is matching up the slab for counters with the slab for sink.

I am a fabricator. We have made sinks from the same material as the countertop and have never had an issue. The various pieces are machined to size and then glued together with adhesives specifically designed for stone. I have never had any concerns about the durability of sinks we made. Once completed you'd have to hit one with a sledge hammer or drop it out of a plane to break it.
