I would kill every single one of them and get rid of the Crinum lilies that are attracting them.

I smash them. There really isn't a pesticide that will take them out and they reproduce HUNDREDS of babies at a time.

If I come across a cluster of nymphs I smash them wearing waterproof gardening gloves, if it's adults I stomp them underfoot.

I made the mistake of allowing a few to live once, and then next season, they were everywhere and they destroyed a lot of my plants. I love my crinums, and lubbers eat many more plants than those.

If you have the adults this year, and you "let them live out their life cycle", that will include laying eggs next to that delicious crinum lily. Next year you will have more, sooner. When they are nymphs, if they are in an open area where plants won't be damaged and they can't drop into leafy cover, I stomp them. For nymphs in other places and the adults, I carry around a small pail with soapy water and sweep them in. By the time I am done making a circuit of the garden, they are all dead and I dump the bucket under a bush or other out of the way place. The soap won't hurt any plants and I'm not spraying poison all over the place every day.

They tend to lay lay nests of eggs in a dry bare patch. In the spring, when the temps begin to rise -in March usually, if you disturb these places, dozens of small grasshoppers jump out. Have your boots on and crush as many as you can. My husband goes out daily. These grasshoppers get very large and eat a lot of plants - seemingly never a weed, but the prized plants of the garden seem to get hit the worst. There was a product called nolo bait which ceased production , not sure of the current status. best luck!

Nolo bait! Yes, I had used this for two years and had the population under control. I think their factory had a fire and they have not resumed. I just can’t kill them. I’ve tried and I feel terrible. I may have to lose my beautiful queen Emma lillies :(

I think you can still treat now. It won’t kills the adults but makes them sterile. I think it expires after a time. So I would use some this year and next.
