Very nice shrub, Ed. It looks very, very healthy! 😊 My mother passed away two days ago and we are thinking of doing something similar. Probably not a hydrangea (lack of space). Probably not a rose either as this area feels like RRD (rose rossette disease) Central. We will see. Great minds think alike!

What a great choice for a memorial tree!

Quick fire makes a tremendous round ball on a single trunk. It's a paniculata type hydrangea, so it will bloom dependably on new growth each year.

Be sure to read up on how to prune it. You can cut twice a year, even. The more branches, the more blooms, because a bloom is produced on the end of each branch. Each pruning cut has the possibility of producing two branches, which is what you want. Here's and older one that's been pruned well over the years. You may need to leave the supporting stake in place for a few years until the plant produces a thick trunk. Wind can break these in half when they are young, and the stake helps support it as it grows.

Thanks, Hyed and Nicholsworth. I have not looked for name match between flower variety's and my mother's name because the name was "invented" by her parents. So, anything will probably do. Hostas may be a good idea as they can be much smaller than rose bushes or hydrangeas!

liquidfeet, that is a nice picture. Looks like the tree is in a roundabout or a large estate?

Oh, like it the look as it starts transitioning to pink. Most of the ones here are already in the pink to green phase though, maybe even thinking about browning. With this nice display of yours, your wife must be winking back at you so enjoy!
