Well, I've now learned (the hard way) the Mandevilla I bought and planted for my wife's Valentine's Day gift don't do well where I planted them.

She really wanted a burst of red flanking our front door. The big box home improvement garden "expert" recommended Mandevilla since our home faces west and the afternoon sun here in Lakeland, Florida is merciless.

Things were going great until the last couple of weeks when temps have started reaching the high 80's every day. Suddenly the leaves are turning yellow and dropping. My research tells me the plants are burning up in the full afternoon sun (from 11am to sundown).

I'm really bummed because they were thriving and so beautiful. I even added a trellis to get them to climb in front of the columns. I was her hero for a few months.

So... I'm back to scratch and need your help. I need a plant (tall, not bushy) that blooms (preferably red flowers), that can take the high temps and full, Florida sun for several hours a day. I'll be happy to water them as much as needed. Would Bougainvillea be a better bet?
