Back in the 70's they used a product to fill the cells called Vermiculite or Zonalight it was either granular or like sand. It was fantastic, however it was full of asbestos. I am looking for a similar product to fill the cells as I don't want to loose space on either side of the block. I don't think Great Stuff knowing how much it expands would be that costly seeing as I only need a small amount and the products that they sell these days to fill the blocks with expanding foam start at 400.00 plus, and I don't know if one purchase would even do enough to cover the space I need. Yes, you can add R-value to the cells of CMUs. We built a number of homes over conditioned crawl spaces in which the cells of the CMU walls insulated with a product called "Core Fill." However, it would not be economical for a 100 SF area.

Polystyrene (styrofoam) bean bag pellets may provide some insulation when dry but if they get wet, forget it. As Greg says, use some kind of foam insulation on the interior or add furring strips to hold fiberglass insulation.

Watched a video of a guy who sprayed foam spray stuff or into a 2 liter bottle. Unless he used forced steam into the bottle at the same time as applying it, it did not cure. I think with the brick I am going to have the same issue. I am going to try and call them today but I feel that it is out. Might just do the Poly beans, if getting wet is the only issue then I think I should be ok. If the inside of the wall gets wet I have bigger problems I would guess. I am just worried about the off gassing. They still sell vermiculite but seems like only in garden applications and I don't want to create an Ant Farm or any other kind of insect farm.

Plain foam sheets are the appropriate choice here.

I tend to over complicate everything. But then I am happy forever, most times. I will remeasure things see what I have.

"Over complicating" is different than "over doing". If you were overdoing it, then I'd give you my blessing. :)

But what you are doing is something complicated that won't be that helpful. In this case, the easier/cheaper way is also the better way (foam sheets covering the concrete).
