figs growing from scratch every spring?

I have a few fig trees that I planted a few years ago. At the end of the year, all of the top would die off, then in the spring, they come back and all branches are brand new. Because they have to start from scratch every spring, all of them are very small, so I don't get a lot of fruits. A friend's fig tree doesn't die off at all, the branches are dormant in the winter and then leaves grow back in the spring, whereas all my branches are dead in the winter. What can I do to make my branches not die off in the winter?
