Garlic spray..........

Has anyone found homemade garlic spray to be an effective deterrent for slugs and snails? I am about to give up on hostas completely although I love them. I already grow them in containers because of the deer that wander through constantly and I can keep them out of the way more easily. And I would have thought that being in containers would limit slug and snail damage but that is just wishful thinking :-) I apply Sluggo liberally - I should have stock in that company! - and it does help but not enough. And I am thinking there might be some other type of hosta devouring insect involved that Sluggo may not address although have not seen anything specific.

It's an easy enough spray to make up but would rather save my garlic for something more appetizing if it is not that effective in slug, snail and assorted pests control.

What's your experience been?
