Hi,

I just purchased a Tangerine Beauty Crossvine and I'm curious about growing them in a pot. I would like to grow the Crossvines in a pot as I want to grow them over a pergola that I have, but no soil is nearby.

What type of pot should I use? From my research it seems as though either a wooden plant box or a stone pot. I live in zone 6 which would cause any clay or terracotta pot to crack in the winter. Do I need to put any stone on top of the soil to protect the Crossvine from the heat? I've read that when planting clematis in a pot, it's recommended to use stones or succulents on top of the pot to protect the roots from heat. I'm not sure if the same should be done for a Crossvine or not.

Lastly, it says that the Crossvine will bloom best in full sun, but it will tolerate some shade. If the base of the Crossvine is shaded, but the vines themselves at the top of the pergola are getting full sun, can I still expect flowers to bloom where it is getting full sun? Or does the base at the pot need sun too? It will get some sun, especially as it is small, but it will be shaded by the pergola and get more shaded as the Crossvine continues to grow over the pergola. I sort of figured it it just means that the Crossvine won't bloom flowers (or not as many) where it is shaded, but any part where it is getting plenty of sun will bloom.
