the next step would be to ID the trees .. so we can define how easily it would be to work under them ... pic of leaves will get you an ID ... one thing for sure.. regardless.. you can not do significant excavation under mature trees without potential damage to said trees ...

and some idea of how active you want to garden would also help .. no use planning something you have no interest in maintaining ...
