Landscape Design Shrubs New England Gardening

Evergreen Hedge in mostly shade and sand???

Looking for some suggestions on potential plants that could be used to plant an (ideally) evergreen hedge that would block off view of the neighbors and road. It is a partly shady location (under a maple tree), and we have very sandy, poor soil. I know its a tall order, but hoping there is something out there that could thrive and give us some much needed privacy. We are in Southern Vermont (Zone 5).

Without photos to clarify the exact positioning of the hedge, we can just say that it is often very difficult to establish any plantings of any size under a maple. You will need to start quite small and coddle for a few years to offset considerable root competition. And your selection of shade tolerant evergreens for your zone is going to be pretty limited. Other than yews, I'm not sure there is much else that will work.

Width isn't really a factor, it opens up to a mostly unused corner of our lawn.

Thank you gardengal48...that was what I suspected. I have been debating for years between a planting and just putting up a fence. I would prefer it to be a living "wall" as opposed to a fence and like the price tag of plants over fencing, but maybe its time to just accept what is and bite the bullet.
