beverlymnz4, mine is in full flop mode now that it got taller. It starts out just beautiful then goes to flop after that first flush of blooms. I'm not sure what can be done other than a taller support which I may have to try next year.

That is a lovely plant! For this type of clematis, I often use an attractive obelisk placed over it, just like with climbing clematis. The clematis sometimes needs tucking in if stems start escaping but it both looks nice and supports the stems. Once it has grown a bit over half height, I stop tucking in the ends and it can spill out without flopping.

Thank you NHBabs! That's a great idea. I did use a circle support for it this year which worked great for the first flush of blooms which you see above. But somehow after that, it got even taller and leggier and now it needs a taller support. An obelisk would work great especially if it's one that has the horizontal parts in several heights. I'll look for one of those! Plus it would add height interest to the bed where I have that clematis.

I use all sorts of things as plant supports: old metal table bases, the wire part of old lampshades, etc.

I have found that there are sometimes wrought iron stools on Craigslist that work well as obelisks, though I am not doing much in person currently. And I sometimes make my own supports from 3 legs of rebar, some type of topper, and a spiral or two of wire or narrow cabling winding up the legs.

Thanks for the inspirational picture, and the support advice from others. My Blue Ribbons was in too much shade, so I moved it. Not too many blooms (only 4) but now I can see that there is hope!
