Recessed lighting layout

Hi, I'm working on installing 4" recessed lighting in our new kitchen. Trying to figure out the layout, and looking for some guidance. I've attached a top down illustration of where I currently have the placement of the lights. I also have an illustration of the cabinet run with the sink and the cabinet run with the range. Dimensions of the kitchen are 185" x 124" with the room opening directly into a dining room on the other side of the peninsula.

Thanks for any help!

Matt

I would center the can over the refrigerator. Were you going to do lighting in the center of the kitchen? I think you'll have a shadowy spot if not. I'm not a lighting pro, so maybe someone else will post for you later.

Thanks, I hadn't put a light in the center of the room, but good call on that and centering the light in front of the fridge. Im now trying to figure out if there will be enough light on the lower cabinets under the peninsula, because the lights are so far from them.

I would prefer the cans near the cabinets to be centered on the edge of the base cabinets, as shown in RL Relocation's mockup, rather than farther out in the room as shown in the original plan. This will give you more task light on your counters without you casting a shadow on your workspace. Hopefully you are also doing undercabinet lights, yes? And everything on dimmers?

I have both UCLs and cans (centered on edge of counters). I thought initially that all of those lights might be overkill, but I LOVE the ability to get a really bright workspace when I'm prepping.

Yes, light counters not floors -- in fact, I like them just in front of the wall cabinets, so that I don't cast a shadow when I'm working. So, like 14-16" off the wall.

Hey, thanks for the replys! Yes, there will be under cabinet lighting. Im struggling with the recessed lights though.

RL Relocation, yes, the sink lights will be on their own switch, the problem with centering the light over the sink, is there is a joist directly in the center, so was considering doing two lights to balance it out. Pendants will also be on their own switch, and all recessed lights are on another circuit with a dimmer.

Initially I was trying to maintain somewhat of a grid pattern, because directly on the other side of the peninsula to the left is a 25' long dining room with 6 6" recessed lights spaced out in a grid 2 x 3 running the length of the room.

Would you recommend centering the can lights above both the range and the fridge?

    Thanks for all the help!

you can't center a light over the range -- it has a hood light of its own, so the counters to either side are more important.

For over the sink, they make what is called a pancake box, this is very shallow, you then can use one of the wafer, or disk-like LED's that look very much like a recessed can.

I would push you pendants more to the center so they light the entire surface.

If we could see the room, and the one with the runway lights" (LOL) that would help.

Hey, yup, here are some photos of the room in its current state. The kitchen is very much still under construction, but hopefully this helps. I've also attached a new layout taking into account some of the lighting suggestions. Orange are 6 inch recessed, yellow are 4 inch recessed and red are pendants. We will be removing the single door next to the patio door and sliding the patio door down to the edge of the previous single door. Then on the other side of the patio door will be the peninsula.

Thanks RL Relocation, just to confirm, are you suggesting I make all the recessed lights 6 inch leds opposed to the 4 inch? Only asking, because the diagram you posted has orange dots.

not necessarily I just wanted to look at it all one color, you did notice I added one light and added a chandelier right? I also move the "center light" up to be in line with the runway

I am not big on "oh 4'' is the way to go", because you already have 6'' so it might be an idea to do that and keep it all the same.

Got it, yeah, I think I prefer having them be 6 inches too to match the rest. As for the chandelier, I agree with that. We are having a 10 ft table being built, and are planning on having two pendants in the center of the room over that. Got it, thanks!

Hmm I would not do two, one would be much better to support both the fireplace and the table IMO...especailly with having three lights over the peninsula.
