Wrong floor color, how do I offset it?

We put in a floor that was rather expensive (for us anyway) and the color is wrong. LVP, so no restaining option. It was supposed to be warmer but all complete the gray-green in it popped. I’m completely unsure what to do about it without offsetting in a way that upends our decor style. We have a lot of light grays, natural unstained pine wood for warmth, cream whites and pastel grayish blues, and dark floors. The flooring is Smartcore’s Burbank Oak. We have the Columbia Oak in another room which worked out well. It turned out to have a nice warm gray/tan undertone. Unfortunately replacing the floor is not a budget option. If I could I’d probably pick something warmer and possible a tad darker. I’d really like this room to have a lighter cheerful feeling without getting rid of the grays and blues (dining chairs and curtains). Any ideas?

People will ask for more views of the actual room and probably the room you said, "worked out well".

It would really help to see a picture of the space and furnishings.

    Can you use a rug?

Hello, I can see how important having a lighter cheerful feeling is. You can create in your space stunning grays and Blues AND at the same time have that feeling of just happiness, lightness and all-around joy.

Color is truly amazing and can give that ambiance of exactly what you want so I would love to see some photos (just a couple) of the surrounding area so I can assist you in creating that vision( you can message me as well )

Happiness is important and can be achieved through color and design.

Looking forward to seeing those Photos

Freedomplace1, I can use a rug, although I’m not sure what color. The room in question is the dining room/living room, although it almost functions as a big hallway for two bedrooms, a bathroom, and the kitchen. 😣 Its 11.5’x20’. Not large, but we have no need for a dining area larger than part of the room but do more need for living area.

Ztnar, I sadly don’t think pictures of the room in question will help as it’s chaos right now (redoing a wall). I can provide a picture of the room that worked well but it’s also in a partial state of disrepair and by no means fully furnished. We’re on the last legs of this renovation. Part of me is just trying to figure out what on earth to do now that it’s done. And of course the floor color that worked out (didn’t) how I didn’t expect it to.

This is the room that worked out well in a color sense (I left out most of the mess). We wanted a different feel for this room than the room with the lighter floor, but the balance I suppose is still in this room. We do want the house to be harmonious.

There are so many possibilities for rugs and not seeing your space or furnishings makes it challenging.

Maybe dark on rug to tie in with the other dark floor.

That is a good point freedomplace1. It is challenging for me as well. Looking at the room I am having a very hard time visualizing anything in it. I do have a 3D mock-up. I will add a couple screenshots of that here.

The carpet color is not my choice. It’s just a place holder. There is the same unstained unpainted pine trim in this room the same as the other room.

We wanted a bit more warm and inviting feeling in this room, whereas the other room the darker floor suited because it was supposed to feel calm. I really just don’t know how to offset the fact the floor is not as warm as I wanted it. I would have even chosen an acacia over it had I known.

I personally would not put a dark rug where looking to create a lighter , happier and harmonious feel . I would put almost a green-blue color but only the right green-blue color would look perfect here and create that light -happy feeling that is so important . It can be done

Susanacruzdesign, I would prefer not dark either, unless for some reason it made the lights in the room pop, but it’s not my preference. I guess my concern with a blue-green would be bringing out that gray-green in the floor that I already hate so much. But if it counteracted it somehow? I would certainly consider it.

Yes that is exactly why there needs to be the exact perfect green -blue . It is a very delicate choice but can absolutely be done to achieve that happy light feeling

As another option, a neutral rug that is close to color of wood, with or without blue/green tones in the rug. This one looks like it might have some green in it.

Susancruzdesign, how would I go about finding that “perfect” shade?

Freedomplace1 that neutral rug seems to help! Although it does bear a striking resemblance to that gray green I’m trying to be rid of. Haha. Maybe it wouldn’t look like that in practice. I wonder if I can find a ruggable like that..... (pets+incoming baby)

Some of these rugs are indoor/outdoor. Can be helpful with children and pets.

Your floor looks good. Really. If you have any guests at your house who decide to crawl around on your floor and examine your wood tones - I would just ask them to leave.

Haha yeah it’s not about guests. Its about me. XD. I really just loathe that gray-green.

Susanacruzdesign I seemed to have missed one of your posts requesting some pictures. Since I don’t have pictures, would inspiration photos do?

It looks like you have two different colour floors - is that correct? If you wanted a harmonious effect in the home, why did you change the colour of the flooring?

SJ, I wanted different feels in different rooms. The darker floor is a nursery and is supposed to be more calming. It is the right voice for that room. I wanted a brighter feel for the dining room.

Susana, I will post those pictures I have. I got distracted by pregnancy woes.

The room is not totally finished here but maybe this will help?

In your original post you said I’d really like this room to have a lighter cheerful feeling without getting rid of the grays and blues (dining chairs and curtains). Can you put anything that is staying (dining chairs and curtains and anything else?) into the room, and take a new picture? What are you looking to buy new - One rug or two? How much seating? TV room? I am guessing you are going to repaint and if so, does it flow into any other room like the kitchen that we should take into account?

I can see this room with lots of pale neutrals in sort of a Scandinavian look. Hopefully your grays and blues are not too dark. You don't need to add any major colours but a large green plant or two always looks good with that style. It would be great to see pictures of all 4 walls.

Forget the rug. The effect of a rugs can be to have people looking down at the rug and flooring around it, including to avoid tripping over the edge of it.

Instead, create reasons for you and others to focus on looking up rather than noticing or judging your flooring -- create other focal points for the room -- and that does not necessarily require expensive art.

What can you add to the room that represents your interests that will pique the interest of others? Do you like music?

Thank you, partim! I am unsure as of yet, if I'm completely honest, what this room will be, other than likely a dining room and...something else. If you have opinions, I just started another discussion about how to furninsh/organize the house here: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/5939615/how-would-you-furnish-this-house

Pale neutrals are what I have sported in other rooms, light grays and light pastel blues, light beiges. I just don't want it to look too cold. :)
