Suddenly So Many Are Blooming

Several clumps greeted me this morning, along with groups and ffo's.


Ethel Buccola had five blooms open today for ffo.


Aerial Applique with six..


Infimity & Beyond with a threesome.


Buddy's Black Eye had four blooms.



Bubblegum Delicious had two blooms open on ffo, but they were on opposite sides of the clump.


Crowning Fire is looking so much better in its second year. Last year almost every bloom was extremely splotchy.



Bluegrass Shadows looks good in any light.



Gilded Butterfly is blooming again, finally bouncing back from its near-death experience two winters ago. It died back then to only one fan and didn't bloom for two years. Now its back at four fans, and I'm happy to see the flower.


Razor Sharp twins


This black purple UF seedling towers over the UF bed. Last year it opened with 9 inch blooms on 30 inch scapes. This year it has 10 inch blooms on 40 inch scapes and gigantic foliage. It's increased to 8 fans in only three years. It has more lateral branching than last year too. I'm not sure what the bud counts will be, but they should exceed last year's high of 13.

    Debra,I love your seedlings! My favorite is the purple UF, What a performer This season. One hopes for that kind of stats On a new plant. Hope it continues to be a great performer. You must be thinking about registering it at some point. So many beauties today, Crowning Fire and Bluegrass Shadows are right up my alley today.

    Isn’t it fun when you have clumps blooming?!!! Crowning Fire is stunning in your photo. I like Buddy’s Black Eye in that clump and your purple UF seedling is a wowser!

    Buddy's Black Eye and Razor Sharp and Chartered Course are my top 3. It was so hard to pick though as all of them, even your darkly delicious UF looked good. I may have a few opening tomorrow myself. Our weather was so wonky this spring that things are off a bit.................Maryl

    Sherry - The purple UF seedling has a lot of great attributes, but it doesn't have quite as many buds as I would like. Not all the buds are open yet, but it looks like it will have 14-17. I really want future registrations to have at least 18 buds. The two late freezes we had may have hindered bud formation this year on the early bloomers, so we'll have to see what it does next year and when it's divided. It's definitely a keeper in my garden. I love the look and it performs better than many of my registered UFs. Also it was one of the few daylilies blooming today that didn't fade badly in today's 91 degree heat with high humidity.

    Kay, Kate and Sherry - Crowning Fire is a beauty, but it has short scapes for me and not a lot of buds where I have it planted. Last year it was nightmare with only one near clean bloom all season. We've had heavy dew for the past few nights, and the blooms have been pretty good. Maybe it's outgrown the splotchiness. I may try it in a different spot next year, to see if height and bud count improve.


    For those of you who mentioned Chartered Course, it has tall scapes and quite a bit of lateral branching. The photo today is more typical of its color than the first photo of it I posted a couple of days ago.

    Beautiful! I'd say my favorite is the black-purple seedling. Great color and form.
