Ok - I'm confused :-) I see no signs of any particular clematis ailment in the attached photo (which appears to be upside down). Nor is it deep purple :-)

While clems can develop a virus it is not that common and again, no sign of any virus in the photo. Did you mean clematis wilt? (and I see no obvious sign of that either). It would be unusual for a 10 y.o. vine to develop wilt....that tends to be a younger, less well established vine issue. And it is not contagious to other clems or any other plants.

With a 10 y.o, well-established vine, I'd suspect some sort of basal stem damage for any type of wilted appearance before I jumped to the conclusion of a disease issue.

Yes, you are right, the photo is upside down. Weird, first time I am using this forum, and I uploaded the photo from my iPhone. I probably shouldn't have uploaded this photo, but it is the one that I am concerned about right now because it is right next to the sick clematis. Yesterday, I sadly cut down the deep purple clematis with more than 20 severely drooping buds so there was nothing to see. To be honest, I was stunned when the buds went from upright and on the verge of blooming to looking completely wilted, as if they weren't taking up any of the water they were getting. When I googled the symptoms, what I read said Clematis Virus and the remedy was to cut off all the dried and wilted parts of the vine. I did that. I was concerned that the wilt or virus or whatever could spread to my pink striped clematis in the photo. Thank you for letting me know that it is not transferable. Can I expect my purple clematis to come back healthy next year? This year, it had the most buds on the vine that it had ever had, and it looked very healthy. It was quite shocking to me to see it go from vigorous and just about to bloom to completely wilted and dried out vines in one day.
