I feel the ceiling in instance works best at a 9' height as it allows for full use of cabinets with no area above to be dust collectors. The separation of the two areas within the area is also more distinct with a cozier area of the kitchen. Other factors are that greasy ceilings are less of a cleaning issue in a lower ceiling as taller ceilings are more apt to getting long term steam and other contamination from cooking than tall ceilings due to heat draw of the taller ceiling.

I would prefer the 9' over the 12' in a kitchen. Our ceiling in the living room is vaulted but the kitchen drops back down to 10' like the rest of the downstairs. With an open floor plan, it gives the space more definition, to my eye at least.

What does your Architect recommend?

Do you really need the 12' ceiling and 2 story entry?

Our architect has suggested the 12' throughout this space. We worry that it might be too tall throughout that whole space and not feel intimate.

I would be afraid that lighting would be an issue. Can lights in the ceiling may not light areas as well with a 12 ft ceiling. I would be afraid to get adequate lighting the room would be very bright. Maybe not? not a pro,

Both show the dividing wall dropped 7" so the kitchen crown has a place to run.

I like the openness of the continuous 12 foot. It's more modern.

What is the style of your house? I like 12’ ceilings in a big house with big rooms. It is very airy and I like how grand it makes the architecture.
