New to plumeria

I bought my first Plumeria 3 weeks ago. It was called Mary Susan. Everything I read and what I was told at the nursery is that they like direct sun and the more the better. However, if I have my plant out in the sun, the flowers and the leaves literally flop. Within a few hours of it being in the shade, everything perks back up. Also, in the beginning the petals had bright pink rims. Now, the pink is completely faded. Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum. It is normal for the colors in the flowers to fade after a few days. Some varieties fade quicker than others. As for the wilting is the pot in the picture the one it came in? Or did you just re-pot it into that pot? And how big is that pot? Maybe share a picture of the plant and pot from the side. From this angle, it looks like maybe the pot is too small and you may need to water more frequently.

It came in a one gallon black nursery pot. The roots were just beginning to stick out in the bottom so the nursery person told me it’s ready to be reported. The new pot is 3 gallons. I used a cactus soil mix. The nursery person also told me to water it once weekly unless it rains. It’s been raining so I hadnt watered it until last Saturday. I got it on 5/22. I’m guessing the rain water wasn’t enough.

The leaves look good but it dropped all of the flowers over the weekend. There are new buds coming in. The weird thing about the flowers is that they open up totally white. It’s not that they open up pink and fade to white, they’re just white now. It dropped its last flower this morning and it had just opened up two days ago. I was told not to fertilize it for six months because they were just fertilized before I bought them. It still has some new buds coming in.

I’m generally terrible with flowers and I’m concerned I’m doing something wrong based on how it’s behaving. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Don't worry, plumeria are tuff. The colors will be more intense with heat and sunlight. So if a plumeria is kept in the shade, the colors will not be that intense or even noticable at all. I would give it a couple weeks in morning sun only as it adjusts to it's new pot while only lightly water. Once a week for the next couple weeks. Then move it out into more sun and ramp up the watering.

Thank you for all of the tips! I watered the plumeria and I’ve been taking it out in the morning sun. The leaves are no longer flopping so that’s great! But now it looks like the little stems where the flowers were are the turning black and I think some of the little buds are looking dark. Any ideas?

my guess is it needs more water and sun. Check the dryness of the soil with your finger, if it is dry, water it. Make sure the pot drains well. If it’s hot and sunny, they need to be watered more than once a week, in my experience. The best way to know if it needs water, is to check the soil.

So I would water it well and try some sun and see what happens. a lot of plants droop in the hot sun if they need water. Always my first guess. Good luck Anita, it’s a beautiful plumeria!

I'm thinking from the repot. Give it time to adjust and start upping the watering and sun in a couple weeks as said and it should be okay. You may lose these current bloom buds, but the bloom inflo should hang on through the adjustment and start producing bloom buds again.

The whole inflo fell off overnight 🤷🏼‍♀️ The plant otherwise looks great and is growing new leaves. I’ll continue with more sun and watering. I guess I shouldn’t expect a new inflo until next year?

    Correct

I have 2 plants full of blooms and all of a sudden the blooms have just dropped without opening. I’m so sad! Any thoughts??

Well...they are outdoor plants. Need full sun and some air...like in Hawaii...

Yes I realize that. I had them inside because the wind was blowing like crazy here.

I have them outside in the sun all day. I thought I was doing good with them (week 14) until just the other day. I have a feeling I may have over watered? Any suggestions you have would be great since it looks like you’re a successful Plumeria grower 😊

Over watering can be the demise of plumies. I have lost my fair share to that when I 1st started...some use a water meter. I never had luck with them. I ended up using scewer sticks to see if bottomed soil comes up damp. Also very important for LOTS of holes at bottom.
