as the collection got totally out of hand as to number of plants ... i just started finding i had a lot of boring green plants .. that frankly.. i shouldnt have wasted the money on ... it was the downside to becoming a 'name' collector ...

I favor the ones in good light and with something interesting about them. Some are just in an awkward spot to photograph. Some are dirty or damaged. Some are beautifully located and always make a good photo. And some are just boring. The solid greens anchor the garden, but I don't notice them.

I am sure everyone would get bored if I posted photos of 400 plus hosta. I am now wondering why I needed that many. I can relate with Ken's comment too. It was fun when I was collecting and now everyone wants a piece of it after all that time and money went into them . Not to speak of the back aches and time. But still like the look as long as the weeds stay out or I have time to sit and enjoy

i used to have a 4 by 8 nursery bed ... where i kept pieces of plants i murdered.. lol ... and gave them their choice as they left ...

and if that asked about that treasure ... i told them i could give them the name of the seller .. lol ... or said something along the lines of.. if i told you what i paid for it.. i would have to kill you ...

at the second house.. i just had some pots of such sitting around ...

they may have wanted a specific one.. but no one turned down the gift .. and were as happy as pigs rolling around in milorganite.. lol ..

I have given my seedlings away. You know the green ones that grow in the paths from raking up debris . They usually just say I like that green one and now I can't remember so many of the names . I depend on Mctavish (Myrle) to tell me what I have and where it is. She gets up and personal with her hosta and mine also. She has so many great tips and wish she posted on here again, She has so much to offer and is like the hosta library. Thinking she was having trouble getting on the site since her new computer.

Oh my goodness, such dismal words from hosta “collectors”........

I am a small time collector. Being in a city lot 60X120 feet, I am reaching close to my max in available space for shade plants. Still have room for plants that can take sun. Some Of my “sun tolerant “ hostas are struggling to adjust, but I think they will pull through. Anyway, I love photographing my hostas. I love most two colored hostas, especially streakers and I also love blues. One hosta I haven’t photographed much is Praying Hands. It has just never looked that good. But this year 4 and it’s not being destroyed by slugs, and it has filled out. So this year I will photograph it. Some others than I tend not to photograph much are very well known hostas such as Undulata Albo-Marginata, or Fortuni Auero-Marginata. That said,this year they are looking good too so I will get pics.

I've had a couple of years where I started out with that goal of getting a good photo of each and every hosta, but some are in places that are hard to photograph.

One of the hardest to take a pic of is my Goodness Gracious. It's planted next to and down the slope from a big, thorny rose. I wanted to move it, but It's like trying to rescue it from the jaws of an alligator, and I can't get a good angle or solid footing to do so. Also, a devil of an area to weed, so my Goodness Gracious has never seen in the limelight it deserves.

"I keep thinking of taking picture of every hosta I have." Yup, me too. But now I figure that's just called dreaming. You know, the dream---how nice the garden is going to be this year---how much bigger the plants are going to be etc. And there's just not enough time. I tend to photograph the ones I like. In fact, if I look at what I photographed the most, they will be my favorite hostas.

So what did I do tonight? I took a few pictures of my hosta! I do really like having a picture to see how much growth has occurred. So I marched right out to my front garden and begin taking pictures of the hosta in one area. I was hoping that the neighbors wouldn't see me taking pictures AGAIN! I plan on taking pictures of all the hostas in the front garden and filing them appropriately. But then again, I just might be dreaming! LOL But then, that's part of what a garden is all about.

I hear you! I am wondering too why I need that many hostas. But otoh I feel like meeting of old friends in April of each year.

Ken, there is a reason why I am trying to get rid of my Komodo dragon lol.

I think it is even harder now with all new creations coming like avalanche.

Fire and Ice because it is a pathetic excuse for a hosta and is only suitable for a mini collection.

I really wonder why I bought a lot of green hostas but they do break up all the variegated and streaked hosta. Doesn’t everyone have a silly neighbor who wonders why you take pictures of plants? But hosta people aren’t even half as crazy as daylily people who use umbrellas and worry about breezes and pollen falling. Yes in my sunny areas I grow daylilies which is a much more expensive addiction.

My sister-in-law and I text pictures of our plants to each other. Everything is too beautiful to keep to ourselves. I visit my garden several times a day and my mature Elegans and my new Sum & Substance make me especially happy.

Here I thought this thread would be about hosta that never look picture worthy. I have a few that tend to have frost damage every year so if I take a picture of them it is from far away and more of a garden bed shot than a picture of THAT hosta. I began with a tag at the base of each hosta..then I took to re-arraning and splitting and as I collected and saw the costs rising I found soo many looked not all that dissimilar. I went to mapping each bed but then at some point they started multiplying on their own and I lost track of too many as I rearranged..now I just said DONE with the collecting..share when asked and let them and me just live our lives. I am about 20 years in and what I don't know fills volumes. The giants seem to have seeds that are not sterile ARG!! while my favorite tiara does not but it grows like wild fire. It's an interesting ride.
