What to do?

How can I make this room feel more comfortable on a small budget? I don't know how to sew but thinking white slip covers over all sofa, couch, and chair? Do I paint the fireplace wall a different color?

love that! Yes, I will upload more pictures tonight or tomorrow - entire first floor is this color and I just want that back wall to be an asset not blend into everything else - I have a 12 foot bay window on the left side (making the photo shot difficult) and all wood floors throughout the home. We just moved in and "he" had that TV mounted the day before the move - which he promises to remove that speaker box and wires or else its out of the room! The photos attached today are the previous owners furniture. I replaced the window panels with http://preview.tinyurl.com/similar-to-drapes fabric and it really lightened the room up!

No overhead lighting in the room, and I despise floor lamps like the one in the corner - on the left side of the TV are 2 cabinets but not a match on the right side - feels unbalanced - currently we have a love seat that needs a slipcover, an old gray/sage couch which needs to be replaced when we win the lottery, and an oversized chair (seen in initial post)

This is a beautiful room! Love the paint color in it now and how the white surround on the fireplace really pops against it. The floors look perfect and that bay window is a total plus in the area! It almost seems like you can set your furniture up the same as the photos have it and then put the chair in the corner, snuggled up to the fireplace. Put a table between the sofa and love seat for a lamp and maybe you have one to put by the chair, too. White slip covers with the white fireplace would be awesome! Add some pillows in your favorite color or to match the curtains you have and you will be set!

Your right, slipcovers are a very affordable way to quickly change the look of a room. White would really help to lighten things up - see the example below. Same sofa, totally different look. Slipcover is from www.needleandshears.com

our sofa's back cushions are not detached, how would a slip cover work?

If the back cushions are attached the body cover needs to go over the back cushions. We design the front with a boxing to simulate the cushions and make separate covers for the seat cushions. Here's an example:

Your furniture looks too good to cover them up with slip covers. To me slip covered furniture always look unkept and generally messy.

The one picture in the main post is our room, the other 4 are for
Zillow- we have grad school couches now and are not really pretty, in fact thinking of placing wood slats under cushions because they've been used so well! But with the first house came many expenses we didn't plan for- the previous homeowner did many DIY projects hurriedly, lazy, and generally shoddy! Figuring it out as we go along!

Your right, the inexpensive furniture covers you can buy at Target or
Walmart do look messy because they don't fit the furniture correctly. But there are furniture covers and there are real slipcovers. Real slipovers are custom made to fit the furniture's form and don't look "messy" or "unkempt". They are a great design option that allows you to quickly change the look and style of your furniture. This article may help you to understand the difference. http://www.needleandshears.com/v/vspfiles/static/CustomSlipcoverDiff.html

Cream or Stone slipcovers on the sofas would look great. I think the walls would look lovely in Sherwin Williams "Rainwashed". Get some lighter drapes. If you wanted the room to look modern you could get a rug with a chevron pattern in blue and white, or else get a light blue based "oriental' (is there a better word for those now?) rug. Overstock.com is a good source for large area rugs, if you find a brand you trust. The rug alone will make the room cozier!
