Guest Bedroom - stumped

I am terrible at decorating. I like stuff then have no idea how to put it together. This is my guest bedroom. I have no idea what color to paint the walls. The wallpaper that you see is supposed to go on the wall behind the bed only as an accent. The chair is in my daughter’s room. She wants to get rid of it but I love the color and would love to put it in the guest room but there’s not that much space for it. I have one of those white hotel comforters outlined in gray but I need COLOR in this room. Ive tried searching for a bed runner but can’t figure out a color. I need advice on the whole darn room..paint..drapery..bedding..accessories. Also, the bed is not centered on the wall as you can tell. I think the round bedside table was probably not the right choice but it’s what I have. Any advice that you can give would be very much appreciated. Please!

Will one or two people be using the room as guests? Will they be staying for a day or two or for weeks? Do you want to put up a TV? What is the size of the room? Is that a queen bed? Can you return or change anything or do you need to keep everything that we see? Is that a closet door and does it open in our out?

So the good news is that with the starting point you have, you can pretty much add any colors you want. Bedding can be a great way to add color (with the benefit of making changing colors super easy). If you like that wine color, go with that. Pick put some great shams that have color and pattern to them. I find an extra quilt or throw works well on the end of the bed; you can fold it to go across the whole foot of the bed or fold it to drape over a corner.

I would also replace the drapes with something that would draw on the color from the bedding accessories.

The table is the right height, and I think the color complements the tacks in the headboard. I would find another spot for the pictures and doodad; leave the guest room for a book and glasses. A lamp and a clock are things I appreciate on an nightstand, other things are just items I can knock over.

These are throw pillows, but you could probably find something similar in a sham:

Thank you Sam for the feedback. I didn’t even take the carpeting into account AT ALL. I think I gravitated towards the grey because of the color of the bed. Any ideas on a specific color that would look good with that blue/gray headboard. I really am open to all ideas. I am horrible with matching colors which is why I tend to stick to as much matchy-matchup colors.

    Partim,
Mainly my mom will use the room. Right now, she stays 2 days out of the week but sleeps in my son’s room because the guest room is too bright she says. A tv will be mounted on the wall (see 3rd pic). I don’t know, the exact dimensions of the room. The bed is a queen. The only thing that I have to keep is the bed. There is a closet in the room...the door opens into the closet. The other door opens into the room.

BlueberryBundtcake..I love the wine color. It’s rich. I would love to use the chair in the room but as Sam pointed out, it’s not a good fit. I do think I need some kind of seating. My mom says she hates sitting on the bed and putting on her shoes. I can chuck the pictures and the crazy looking frog accessory. If you have other ideas, please share.

If the guest room is too bright for her, definitely go for blackout curtains.

It’s more of the walls than the windows that she says is too bright. My son’s room has a navy colored ceiling and light gray walls..his room has a space theme and it’s really very cozy (copied the room from Pinterest..its the best room in the whole house) says she sleeps better in there but I can’t replicate that color scheme in the guest room.

    What color for the walls???

I think something in a saddle leather color would look nice with the headboard, but it’s really hard to know just by looking at photos with a computer. If it were me, I’d do a while comforter, a saddle colored throw for the end of the bed, a square bedside table on one side with a good lamp and some art for the walls that is soothing/calm and beautiful, maybe of natural things like a landscape or plants. I’d put the TV on the wall and change the window treatments to something your mom would like, depending on how much light control she needs, maybe a wooden type shade or blackout curtains in a pretty beige pattern. Alternatively, keep what you’ve got so far and use gold as your other main color so the room is gold and grey: gold throw, gold light, art with gold frames and gold in the artwork/photographs. The gold will look great with your carpet and the difference between your carpet and your grey will look intentional.

For your mom, consider a small bench or square poof that is easy to move and that she can sit on to remove shoes, etc. Maybe you can stick it into a corner so it’s out of the way but available when needed.

Would not add wallpaper. Keep the wall paint color light and neutral for a small guest room . What you have doesn't look bad a tall.

Add any color to the room with the bedding and window treatment -- something that could be changed depending upon the guest and/or season or as your own taste change.

Make your bedspread/comforter a solid color and reversible with matching pillow shams. Additional pillow shams in the same style and material could add any color you like -- perhaps your favorite bright bold colors.

A shallow box shelf at least the width of the tv it appears you intend to hang on the wall could be useful and a better fit for that space across from the foot of the bed than a deep dresser or chest of drawers.

What if I blocked the closet door and put a chair there? I use the closet for storage only. I like the gold/grey combo but I love that wine color too. Would you suggest painting the ceiling or leave it white? Will absolutely replace the artwork.

You could put a smaller chair next to the bed, so nightstand on one side and chair on the other. Depending on how much space you have, you might be able to go with a small slipper chair or something like this:

    https://www.furniturenowgallery.com/en/product/558515-CoasterFurniture-Malone-190883-Dining-Chair#558515_product_2

If you need something smaller, you might take a look at antique dining or folding chairs, as they tended to be smaller back then. Replacing the nightstand with a smaller one might buy you more space for the chair.

I don't see room for a chair. Is there a corner I'm not seeing?

Perhaps bench at end of bed but looks like the foot of bed sticks out? what is that?

Also I'd like to see a skinny console table under the tv [under 12" deep] but that might interfere with a bench. Or is that something she could sit on? [not sure what I"m seeing lol].

Less clutter on night stand. Pretty black out curtains.

Sumptuous bedding with a few pillows and a throw.

I'm feeling silver and gold neutral.

skinny mirror idea above bed and 1 or2 pictures on the wall where there's a picture.

    A cute chandelier.

Trish, I think you might be seeing the TV sitting on the floor across from the end of the bed.

    edit: stupid autocorrect ...

I think the chair is fabulous, but don’t think it would fit in the room. I like wallpaper for wall behind bed, also. Removable wall paper is great for when you ‘d like a change.

i think the main things to enhance the room are thicker/ plusher bedding and a ceiling fixture with a bit more glitz that is dimmable,

I would paint the room pink> Look at BM White Dogwood; Angelic; Playful Pink

I Like the chair and you should use it as a starting point.

The wallpaper - not so much. It looks like bathroom or hallway wall paper to me.

I don't think you "need" to paint but work with the eggplant colored chair and add some pillows, throws, and some interesting art and you should be off to a good start.

Suggest skipping the chair due to size of room and color of carpet. Create a mood board and have a plan as it will be much easier and you’ll end up with a coordinated room - take your time. My suggestions:

    - paint walls white to coordinate with wallpaper and your white/grey comforter - layer bedding for a cozier feel

    - Change drapes to white and IKEA has great linen like curtains at a good price. Also purchase their liner - see info below and be sure to move rod up higher

    - You could paint the side table white and consider new coordinated lighting.

    - Add art (mirror is useful) and if room allows, a bench under window will be handy

    - Add a small console under tv so the wall feels balance and a good spot to place items on

    - Finally, consider secondhand items that you could refresh If need be. For example on Facebook’s Marketplace in my area, the bench is $70Cdn and console $25 which could easily be chalk painted and an antique brass handle added for a complete transformation.

If it is a choice between a console for the tv or seating for your mother, I would go with the seating - a bench would fit at the end of the bed. Put the tv on the wall. I agree with the blackout curtains. If you have a choice, I would put bedside tables on either side of the bed, maybe small square ones, with reading lamps that are a little taller to provide enough light. Good luck.

To reduce feeling of too much light in the room, paint the wall behind headboard dark blue. And whites and blush accessories and bedding. Great bedding especially sheets, make a guest room most inviting. Here are some ideas.

Would a bench work for your mother, or would she find it easier to get up and down from a chair with arms, or is it having a back to a chair what she desires? Find this out before you decide between a bench or a chair.

I would leave the room the neutral color it is now and find blackout curtains the same color as the wall to help keep the room darker for sleeping.

Remove everything from the bedside table and find a lamp that's taller and thinner so it take up less space on the table.

Add a lightweight comforter to the duvet and get matching shams if you don't already have them.

A bed scarf is very easy to make yourself if you can't find one. I made mine with fabric I loved and fabric glue. Something like this bring in the rug color and works well with your headboard.

If you're looking for a chair to be used primarily by an elderly person, do NOT choose one with splayed legs, especially for a relatively small room -- they're a potential toe stub trip hazard. What is the measurement from bottom of usually worn shoes to the back bend of the knee? That is how high you want the seat of the chair ... or choose one that can be raised and lowered such as a desk chair. DO choose a chair with at least elbow rests if not full arm rests -- otherwise ... really ... who actually likes sitting for an extended time in a chair w/o armrests unless there is a table to rest your arms on or something in your lap to rest your arms on.

If the objective is to have a place to sit on only long enough to put on shoes and the foot of the bed will not do, perhaps choose a piece that could also serve as storage such as a small cedar chest..

I’d choose a warmer color (like burgundy or even yellow) and pair that with some shade of blue like navy. A color palette somewhat like these in the pictures below. Then add the cream/white to keep things from looking too dark

Yellow and navy if you are feeling adventurous lol

A very small slipper chair would tuck in a corner. No room for much else.

How much room is there from the bed to each wall? I think you have room for a chair in the corner by the headboard. Or block the door to the closet.

Will the bed fit crossways in the room? You'd probably have to scoot across the bed to change the sheets, and use a duvet vs a bedspread but it would give you more options for a chair. It would be very helpful if you got a tape measure and measured the bed and the room, especially since it looks like the bed frame is longer than the standard queen bed.

I would remove the door to the closet, get your storage items out of there, and set up a luggage rack or dresser with drawers so she can put down her luggage and have room for her stuff. Hooks rather than a closet rod. Many hotels these days have dispensed with closets and gone this route. https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/roadwarriorvoices/2017/11/19/hotels-get-rid-closets-add-other-storage-solutions/875787001/

If she really likes the dark ceiling in your son's room, why not do a dark ceiling here too? It's just paint.

Every one of you have given me great ideas!!!! Ideas that I am partial to:

    1. Adding a bench at end of bed for seating. I need to make sure it’s not too low though for my mom
    2. Was planning to put the TV on the wall
    3. Replacing nightstand with 2 smaller ones with taller lamps. My mom bought the lamp on the nightstand herself but she will be ok once she sees the room
    4. I like painting the wall navy behind the bed
    5. I like the color combos suggested..grey/gold and blue/blush/white
    6. I would have loved to have used the wine colored chair but it really is too big for the room.
    7. I need black out curtains
      8 wall decor?????

I want to thank all of you for your ideas and suggestions!!! You guys are awesome

Benches come in a variety of heights, and some can also have storage, which can be nice for extra pillows and blankets and such in a guest room. Figure out which chairs she likes best and how tall they are; then just get a bench that height.
