Very interesting! I knew nothing about them. I didn't even know if they were edible until I googled it. "Edible when made into jam." A real plus is the deer don't bother them! I hope they do well for you! Keep us posted!

The big ones are briefly mentioned in at least one of my Texas plant books, but I also don't recall ever seeing much about them in any searches until these dwarfs became available this or last year. Know there is usually a degree of hype with these introductions that may have hooked me, but they do seem happy so far.

After the question on how well they'll do in our moderately alkaline clay, am wondering how fast they can fill in to their ~3ft width. They were looking pretty stark and unsubstantial in this photo a few weeks back when the sod was freshly down. Have since added a few other things, but bed is still dominated by mulch:

Nothing close to success yet - though they have hung on in our north Dallas clay and heat. So they might work around here in a more favorable location. Our first year (2020) problems with rabbits and cut ants were discussed here: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/5969730/what-is-devouring-aronia-leaves.

Caging them reduced the rabbit damage in season two, but cut ants returned and stripped much of the new growth before I thought to put an ant barrier down. What leaves remained stayed healthy, but they did not put out much new growth.

I've occasionally noticed cut ants around our lot over many years, but have never seen them denude single plants like they did with the Aronias. Don't know if there is something about this particular plant they love or it's simply proximity to their nest - which I've not been able to locate.

This year I'll treat before leaf-out to see if they do any better. If not, will move them to sunnier spots - I also suspect ~4 hours of direct morning light may not actually be enough for them. Though giving them a chance early this season, I'm already doubting they'll work for us in this partial sun and pest plagued spot.

Best I can say at this point is they might work in DFW in the right locations, but proceed with caution before making a major investment in them.
