Useful make-work project?

Several of my well established hostas are slowly declining as tree roots invade their space. Most performed quite well for a few years but are now looking rather stressed. I don’t have good alternate locations, and spin-out bags don’t just call to me. Is it a worthwhile exercise to dig, clear out the roots in the hole, bare-root the plant, and replant in the same spot? Or is the time I might be buying equal to the time the plants would be set back by the move?
