Kitchen remodel

I have a tradional cookie cutter style home with eat in kitchen and small usless dinning room. I would like to open the dining room to the kitchen so I can finally use my beautiful dining table. However, I currently have a table in front of sliding glass door. If I do this I would eliminate that table which would leave empty space in front of slider (My dining table is to big to put in this space). I have a peninsula already. Would it be acceptable to place a free standing island in front of slider?
