A viburnum of some type but I can't be more specific. Perhaps someone else from your area can nail down a species.

Do you need to prune? For what reason?

Looks more like a Cornus to me with those parallel veins. Maybe C alternifolia.

Thank you so much for that identification. Now that I know what it is called, here is a photo of the whole tree. It is not that I want to prune but usually i do nothing and then in a few years people say oh you should have been pruning every year.

Its fine. Leave it in peace. This species grows naturally in beautiful layers and doesn’t need any help. Btw if you’d shown that picture together with the first one the Cornus id would have been confirmed right away. If you give as much information as possible it’s easier for us.

As said, pagoda dogwood. Here's one of mine (they spread easily by seed):

Has had too much pruning already, would look a lot better branching to the ground. Like the one in the beng photo.
