Help decorating kitchen ledge please

I have this ledge in my kitchen and would love to add some decorative pieces but no idea how to pull it together. The ledge is small, possible 18 in wide so not able to add anything too wide. I would love a decorative pot with natural colors and maybe a basket? Thoughts??? There is a door there for access but I’d be good with covering it and using a ladder going forward.

Whatever you put up there would become dust collectors. What is the door for?? I can’t imagine climbing up there and through the door...

I’ll send the whole kitchen shot later but no to adding something? Just leave it empty?

The door is adjoining a room upstairs. It’s not difficult to enter either through door or with a ladder.

    That is fascinating.

I’m averse to anything being above kitchen cabinets or on ledges unless the homeowner is a “clean-freak” and would be very good about cleaning items on very elevated surfaces. If you would like to put something up there, go ahead. I just wouldn’t put anything too interesting; I mean, would you want to crane your neck to get a better look at an interesting piece of art or pottery because it was so out of reach?

So if you do want to set a few items up there, keep it simple: glass jars (covered!) filled with colorful marbles. Or something specifically special to you and your family. Just throwing an idea out there.

You could hang a wreath of some kind on the door up there.

    Empty.

That is interesting, could be fun to decorate on Halloween, creepy character coming out of the door.

I don't quite understand this.........I am assuming there is a regular entrance to this room via an upstairs hall?

For right now, I think the door looks odd and I would not draw attention to it.

I would drywall in the space and then add a simple wall decor, such as a wreath.

I don't understand the reasoning behind the ledge. Maybe it looks better in person, but in the images it just looks awkward and is distracting...especially the door, ceiling peak, and the kitchen light fixture off-centered from each other.

I would check out how much it would cost to cover the opening with sheetrock and instead make the shelf area part of the room with the door (maybe a built-in bookcase)...or take down the ledge portion of the ceiling, close up the door, and paint it all the ceiling color.

At any rate, I wouldn't put anything up there.

Wait what? I was a flat out no to putting anything up there and in fact was going to recommend having the area closed off with drywall. But then you mentioned that door as actually being an entrance to a room? Do you mean like attic space? Like an attic room for storage? Or an actual room? Are we talking Flowers in the Attic here? I'm picturing scary things LOL! OR do you mean this is a second entrance into an upstairs room which has a regular entrance? If that is the case again all say drywall that space in. You can keep the door in place and then enter through that door from the upstairs room and that will become storage space.

I am sure the OP means the ledge is accessible from a door in a room on the other side.

The door probably should not have been added which is something I am now seeing. Initially I had greenery with lights and jars which I thought always looked pretty. Now I am looking change it with a simple look. It may not look great to you all lol but it’s all I have to work with right now. Reaching out for suggestions.

Behind the door is attic space adjoining a bedroom.

So, you are looking only for ideas that involve leaving the door? Is that correct?

LOL. Clearly, the door has everyone stumped.

Colleen - could you list the actual dimensions - height, width, depth...

I wasn’t looking to do construction right now, that is correct. I do now have a pit in my stomach tho that this may look Rediculous and again no construction in the near future to fix it. Still looking for pics of the kitchen facing the other way.

I honestly would lean toward nothing in the space, just to keep attention away from it.

It looks like it's hard to see, even sitting in the eating area.

Add a piece of art, using the door frame as the frame. You could add a few simple vases.

They even added spotlights so you could highlight it! Do you love a ceiling fan in the kitchen? If you need ventilation and have that attic space, use the door to install a ventilation fan; maybe whole house style.

I would not highlight that area.

I would not put anything there.

I really dislike the look of the door. It's hard to say how noticeable it is without seeing the perspective from the eating area.

If the door is an eyesore from the floor level I would put one large basket in front of the door, similar to the wall color.

I think it’s pretty cool looking. Unique. Intriguing.

Maybe that entire area requires a talented artist to paint something interesting that includes a door and then the spotlights would have a purpose. Or use a mini-fridge vinyl door wrap on it.

a few large baskets. that's it. or nothing. and to make the door less noticeable, I'd remove the trim work around it and get a better fitting door. paint it all to disappear. maybe paint that wall a darker color so that it recedes, and put a few baskets like deegw pictured, below.

Thank you Beth H. Your advice is super helpful.

Decoenthusiaste, there are no spotlights highlighting the ledge. My reference to white lights was not spotlights but white plug in lights I added to the baskets and greenery.

Sammie i could add dimensions over the weekend. Thanks!

So, those two eyeball can lights aren't there by design? Or am I misreading what they are?

There are 6 high hats over the table area. The point I was correcting is that the 2 lights are not highlighting the ledge or needing a purpose. They are solely lighting in the dining area
