Thursday's Child Has Far To Go

I still haven't hit peak, but it will be any day now. Strange year. Nothing and then boom; everything starts going at once.

First is one I really like. Picked it up at a local nursery and it bloomed really well last year and looks to be equally productive this year.

Orange Smoothie:

This one can be very pretty given PM shade. Has a bit more blue in it then the picture shows. I can't remember if I posted it before.

Palmetto Pride:

A new one this year. I wanted a later bloomer and taller scapes on an orange red. This one has an excellent habit, strong tall upright scapes and a good bud count. It's color is developing as it's got going.

Bridgeton Intense Flame:

Can you get too much of good thing. Debra and I are in agreement about the bloom on this one:

Pink Aloha:

This is an FFO on Acquire the Fire. It bloomed the day our high was 84 and the color was not to be believed. It does well in the heat, but boy oh boy in the cooler weather it's intense.

Acquire the Fire:

Another pink I have that has good stats. It is a paler pink in our heat, but the substance remains good and it has rebloomed every year I've had it. Here it is with Orange Smoothie:

Honky Tonk Barbie (w/Orange Smoothie):

One of my favorite yellows. A deeper yellow then Googies. I love them both.

Nancy: Honky Tonk Barbie is a good grower. I wish she was more colorfast, but in our heat the fact that she does so well AND repeats counts for quite a bit........Thanks for the comment Signet. I like them too...........Kay and Laura: Bridgeton Intense Flame is by Apps, who has a solid history of hybridizing. The color on B. Intense Flame I'm not quite sure of yet. As our temperature changes good colors can go bad and vice versa, but the plant habit itself remains excellent on it......Kate: I know you are a yellow fan too. Yea for our team. Lisa Apps Sybrant (also by Apps) is an excellent yellow...........Sherry: I see some pictures on the data base where Orange Smoothie doesn't look all that great. It's a subtle color that can go more yellow as the day and temperature progresses, but I still get lots of the mellow cantaloupe color with the faint red eye. It's loaded with buds again this year........Debra: Funny on your reaction to Honky Tonk Barbie. It was the same as my initial reaction for it's first two years and just barely avoided the cuts. Selman's daylilies from research aren't all that colorfast anyway. BUT, it was like the little train that could. Maybe not the fanciest, but so dependable and with repeat; and since most pinks usually go pale on me anyway, why not keep one that is such a good grower? I'll be watching your new one with interest.............Thanks Julia: Ironically I have Debra to thank for Acquire the Fire. I'm not too big on anything other then orange red/ but Acquire the fire is such a dark glowing beauty (and pretty darned colorfast) that I fell in love.............Maryl

We definitely agree on Pink Aloha's blooms. Yours looks exquisite, and it's my favorite bloom in the post. The color, the ruffles, and the size make it a favorite with me. But we disagree on Honky Tonk Barbie. I'm growing mine in a pot, and from the first two blooms I don't think it will be a keeper for me. The shade of pink and the edge are not to my pink standards for hybridizing.. Elizabeth Hewitt is a Selman pink with exactly the same genetics as Honky Tonk B, and it's the one that looks better for hybridizing because of the plant habit. Acquire the Fire is a wonderful red in every way. I wish I hadn't lost mine. Bridgeton Intense Flame has that color you've been craving. I hope it does well for you. It looks like Orange Smoothie is a winner for a hot Oklahoma garden. The yellow and Palmetto Pride are attractive too!

Maryl, I always enjoy seeing your photos. I’m glad you posted Orange Smoothie, it always looks better than mine. I love the color of it. Pink Aloha is such a beauty.

You know I love that yellow! So cheerful! I always love your Palmetto Pride pictures. I think you are the only one who posts that one. Pink Aloha is always wonderful when it is that color. And your Orange Smoothie has great color. Pretty ones here!

Pink Aloha is a beauty. Brighton's Intense Flame is a color I really like and your group is very pretty.

I always like Pink Aloha, such a nice pink. I picked up Honky Tonk Barbie this year because I remembered liking your pictures of it last year.

Maryl - Reliable rebloomers are few, and that alone makes Honky T Barbie a good one. The third bloom today looked better. But it's got more peachy tones in it than I like. I won't be able to tell much about Elizabeth Hewitt since the deer devoured all but two buds. Next year will tell the tale on that one.

Debra: Some people have hit the pink color gold mine. Stamilie pinks are almost always what you and I like in a pink color. I think Salter hit it out of the ball park with Pink Lemonade Party as far as color, and the Buntyns had their finger on the pink pulse too (I trialed more then just Pink Aloha). The trouble for me has been that almost all these luscious pinks have other problems in my climate. So when Selman gets it right on the stats, but the pink is not quite up there with the above Hall of Fame pink people, I guess I give it leeway. For me at least, I've been spoiled by the "real true pink" of roses. If I post again, I'll try and include my oldie but goldie daylily that comes as close to rose pink as any of them.............Maryl

Here's what Honky Tonk B looks like in my garden. OK, but not great. I do understand its value in your climate. It's a little peachier than the photo looks. This bloom is far better than the first two were.

Good Picture of Honky Tonk Barbie. Very similar to how mine shows in my picture. If you look at the database the color is all over the spectrum. I've never seen it a dark pink however in my climate. Your the expert breeder, can you breed with it? I have no clue how your work your magic. I'd hate to loose the repeat and solid stats of HTB though........Maryl
