Any Luck Growing Manzanita in Large Containers?

Have any of you tried growing manzanita trees in large containers, and if yes what kind of soil have you used? A Manzanita nursery I contacted advised against using a soil that is pure cactus mix and they seemed to think that the plant should have some nutrients in the soil. These seem like tricky plants because they want fast-draining soil but do not want to be totally dry until they establish. Most online resources warn against over-fertilizing these plants, but unlikely they are considering a plant in container soil.

The only manzanita that I have grown successfully for long periods of time is 'Howard McMinn' and you could plant that in a container in the same kind of soil that you would use, say, for a conifer. I think that it would do fine.

Well...I purposely didn't say because.....I use cactus soil! But you could mix in some regular potting soil, say 25%. Or just add a bit of compost. You are goign to have to experiment a bit. If I were doing it I would ask a CA native plant expert. The folks at Cal Flora come to mind.
