Monster plants?

I have the strangest issue: giant plants. That is, periodically, I'll have plants that grow larger, sometimes more than double, than their typical size. I first wrote it off to wrong seeds received. But it's consistently in a certain area of my yard. Six feet tall Brazilian Verbena, dwarf annual coreopsis that's four feet tall (that one, I brought the packet I grew at another house, so it wasn't seeds that time), five feet tall Symphotricium oolentangiense, etc. It's bothersome because I'll plant it, expecting it to be short, and it towers over the plants they're in front of.
As you can see, the only thing they have in common is, they thrive in lean sunny soil. That's what have. The Echinacea that are there aren't giant. Not the platycodon. There's no rhyme or reason to it, that I see. Any ideas?
