Are Cenizos the same as 'Silverado' TX sage? Those plants look just like the ones I had in my yard for years, and I never noticed those moth cats on them. Very cool!

Yes, Cenizo is also known as "Texas Sage", but it is not a true sage. I believe Cenizo may be the favored food plant for Calletas, but they will eat a number of other plants as well, including ash and Ocotillo in their native habitat. I've reared the caterpillars a number of times, and they do very well on privet. I haven't been stung by the caterpillar's "barbs", but I have experienced minor skin irritation from contact with the fluid produced from the barb area (tubercle) when the caterpillars are disturbed.

Arbordave, thank you for relating your experience! I know we're all going to be wishing for caterpillars now, but I'm wondering if we have much of a chance of seeing them if we're in the city where so many people spray for 'bugs'.
