So how did your cucumbers in 5 gallon pots go? I grow mine up a cattle panel arch and they grow over the top. I think if I were growing cucumbers in a pot, I would let them grow over it and onto the ground. Unless you had some supported height, it was probably a challenge. If you have little space, maybe you could look into some bush cucumbers?

LOL......I started to read the response with interest.......and it was my post! I'm not sure why it showed up again so recently. Just in case the initial poster is still around, I was going to suggest a variety of cucumber that doesn't grow so large....and are good in pots. I'm still using my cattle panel arch with County Fair cucumbers planted on both sides. They grow up over the top and seem happy with that amount of space. Here's a pic of it. It ends up growing all over the top too. Please excuse the mess around it. Weeds grow big enough for firewood around here. :) I do have to occasionally help the plants to grow upright and latch on to the panel. Oh....and I also lined the cattle panel with concrete reinforcing wire, which are a bit easier for the tendrils to latch on to.

Here's another possibility. In addition to my cattle panel cucumber trellis, I'm growing a different pickling variety on my deck in a 15-20 gallon pot. I didn't think it would grow as well as it's growing. I had originally put a 6' trellis behind it, but it's not going to be enough. Plus, the plant is growing out the front and sides of the pot too. I have put some bamboo stakes in the pot for some of the stems to grow up on, but they are not tall enough. I did add an additional wire cage just in front of the pot and they are latching onto that too. As you can probably tell, I'm more into function than aesthetics! haha But one thing you could do is to get larger, taller bamboo stakes and insert them at the edges in the pot (so as not to damage any roots), and the stems can grow up those. Are you having trouble keeping your 5 gallon pots watered? Okay.......just remembered that the initial post was a year ago!! Oh well.......maybe it might help someone else with a similar problem.
