one option is a boating supply store selling waterproof bins w/ gamma seals. They are very sturdy. We use them for all sorts of things stored in the garage and garden shed.

Out in the open storage is difficult for those of use with small yards.

This is something that I've been thinking about, and have yet to make a decision between the garage and an outdoor-accessible storage space under an interior stairway.

We have ours in a protected area in the garage - under some very sturdy shelves.

In 1994, my supply of water was lost because the plastic jugs fell over (or were hit by other objects), and all the water ran out. I had to fill one or two of the jugs immediately with water that was still available from the tap, but I was not able to get more than a couple of gallons from that. We did have a swimming pool, however, and so that was helpful.
