I cut my 'Blue Hill', back hard and often get a second bloom. Not, of course, the western salvias, which have not yet come into bloom.

I also deadhead my salvia and that usually keeps it blooming through the end of August...by September I give up and am in clean mode so I usually chop it off then.

Thanks for the feedback - has anyone kept them up? I don't even know what they look like as I have been cutting them back as they look so ratty.

However this year its been extremely dry but still humid - none the less they don't look as bad as past years. But if its an ugy one to keep up then I'll cut back.

Mine still tend to look more on the ratty side than not after deadheading -- this just is not a foliage plant :0/

I always cut my Maynight back ( did just this last week) and they are already sending up new growth and will have a good second bloom in the fall. I'm in east central Iowa.

I deadhead. Maryland is always humid in the summer, 80-90% and I’ve never noticed the foliage looking bad because of it. As long as I deadhead, it blooms continuously.
