kitchen feedback

Any advice on this kitchen redesign?

A few things to note:

  1. window (next to stove) does not go to the floor - there are only 18" below it though
  2. microwave cabinet is a place holder for microwave vent - small kitchen so appliances need double duty
  3. ignore colors
  4. door will be a pocket door to the mudroom
  5. there are 2" extra on sink wall

Thanks!

That is more kitchen space than in my first apt. Major problem I foresee is people coming and going from mud room and walking through your work triangle while you are cooking or carrying pot of boiling noodles to sink. One way to avoid that is to move cooktop to where sink and DW are, and move sink and DW and trash can so they are opposite mud room wall (facing into room beyond kitchen) and use the cabs to left of mud room as more storage and counter space.

    Would this be possible?

I think marylut has a great idea. At the least, I'd switch the fridge and range, if it's possible to vent the range on the interior wall. The tall pantry would go to the left of the fridge, where you can use a side-loading cabinet, and MW in an upper cabinet to the right.

No room for a penisula. here's the view from the kitchen to living room. the second picture shows the current set up - never had an issue with the work flow interrupted by mud room traffic.

we also need a table for 4 in this space.

the side load pantry would be blocked by the table. should have mentioned in the first post that this is an eat in kitchen. the home is 850 SQ ft so we don't have a separate dining room.

@marylut I assume this is small because numerous websites wouldn't let me use their layout because the dimensions were too small. 🤷‍♀️😂

The cabinet run on the exterior wall would still be the same length, but you'd have to use the pull-out pantry, rather than the side-load.

How close can the fridge be to a wall and still be able to open it? I'm working on the design with switching the range and the fridge. So far the con is that there is a lot less prep space.

    thanks for your ideas!

This would give us a lot more storage. The 2nd prep space would be a little smaller than the original plan - but its mostly a prep chef type job anyway. I'm not sure what it would be like to sit at a table next to the giant pantry space. I think I would likely flip the 2 pantry cabinets and have the drawers closer to the table.

Another thought I had was to leave the large pantry on the right and use an upper and lower for the left. That may reduce the looming/blocked in feeling of the table. Since the table is right there I don't think countertop is needed for loading/unloading groceries.

    Thanks for feedback.

To answer your fridge door question, in order to fully open the door, the fridge needs to stick out past the countertop by 2 times the fridge door thickness. My door is 2 1/4“ and the fridge juts out 4 1/4” and is really a struggle to remove the bins out to clean them.

BTW, the local code here requires the bottom of MW be at least 18“ above cooktop burners for fire safety reasons. It also gives enough room to stir pots. The latest rendering makes yours look too close.

In second photo above, the cab lines don’t line up with top of fridge. I think you’d create a prettier and less busy sightline if they all lined up.

To answer your fridge door question, the fridge door needs to stick out from what is on both sides by at least 2x the thickness of the fridge door. My door is is 2 1/4” thick and fridge sticks out from counter 4 1/4” and it is a struggle to open the door wide enough to remove bins for cleaning.

Your rendering shows Microwave really close to cooktop burners. Our local code requires the bottom of any cabinet or microwave be at least 18” above the burner. Reduces fire and gives room for stirring the pots.

Domino effect. With the latest changes, the very narrow door in the lower corner of the sink wall no longer makes sense. Too far from cooktop to store spices, too far from oven to store cookie sheets. Depending on your storage needs, it may make sense to just widen the lower cab.

thanks marylut. the software doesn't have an over range microwave, so that's just a place holder. I agree the top of the fridge and cabinet above should be closer, again, software limitation.

do you think this flows better? we have 2 adults cooking, one is primarily the sous chef.

marylut, not sure what you mean in the domino effect. the small door on the bottom left? cookie sheets would go there. it's 24 inches away. the baker would be using the space on the left of the stove to prepare dough/batter.

Sorry, domino effect means change one thing and then something else needs to change. If storing cookie sheets in that thin pullout cabinet, then I would move it to the immediate left of the oven. To me the lower cabinet row looks unbalanced. The cookie sheet pullout is too thin to be at the end of the wall and if you move it right next to the oven it sort of visually balances the bank of 4 drawers on the other side of the oven.

Why don’t you put the coking sheet cabinet on the other side with the narrow drawers and you get more space between the sink and stove as I would think it be your landing zone and prepping stuff to be cooked.

How big is the dish washer? can it be smaller.

Be aware that a pocket door will require opening up and restructuring the wall.
You may want to consider a rolling cart with a butcherblock top for extra prep
space....it can stand in front of the window next to the range.

    thanks for the suggestions!
